"I love to paint on canvas. The oils, pigments, cottons and woods are my collaborations with the earth. I only take half credit for these joint creations. The earth has created the other half."

VISTA 1 PAINTINGS

These oil paintings are new versions of two 1920s art movements: NeoSurrealism, an avant-garde form of painting and NeoPrecisionism, a geometric landscape form of painting. In this series, I deconstruct what I see and then rethink the reconstruction. This is my way of taking something that's familiar and challenging myself to look at it differently while keeping some sense of familiarity.

To quote Robert Lynd, "In order to see birds it is necessary to go into the silence."

So what is “the silence” that Robert Lynd wrote about?  For me it’s any place in nature that’s quiet and peaceful. It’s a place I needed to creatively explore and painting birds in oils was my way of doing this.

I’ve been a painter my entire life, but not always painting birds. That came about more recently. When I travelled to “this silence”, it truly opened my eyes to the simple and often overlooked beauty of birds. I was too busy to really notice these majestic creatures until I began exploring nature. But once I did, I found them to be uplifting and healing to watch and paint. It must be the way that they move through the world so effortlessly.
